The Bourgholtzer House, located at 611 Court Street in Portsmouth,
Ohio, is across from the Scioto County Court House and was built sometime
between 1849 and 1851. Up until thirteen
years ago, it was the only structure still lived in by the descendants of the
original owners.
It is a two story brick Federal style
house. The brick pattern is common bond, a pattern which has five rows laid in
a running bond pattern and the fifth turned end to end. The roof is a gable
style and metal material. The house is 15 feet by 35 feet. There is a plain
cornice and frieze, windows are six lite over six lite (panes). They have stone
lentils and stone sills.
The Bourghoultzer residents were 19th Century
vaudeville performers, one of whom recently lived in the house with his
musician grandson. The family has a long history if performing talent such as Frank
Bourghoultzer, who was a nephew of the residents and the very first NBC News
White House correspondent. A sister-in-law sang in the Metropolitan Opera in
New York City.
